WHO authorisation for Covaxin
After months long safety scrutiny, the World Health Organization has included India’s indegenous Covid-19 vaccine– Covaxin in its authorised emergency use list.

The Indian vaccine jointly developed by Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and private vaccine maker Bharat Biotech will now be recognised by other countries with this listing. The WHO authorisation to Cavixin is also a big relief for Indians who received the shot as they need not face restrictions when travelling abroad.

Granting the EUA for Covaxin to be used in people 18 years and above with a dosage of two shots with a gap of four weeks, the WHO said  that the vaccine is not recommended for use on children and pregnant women as the data available is still insufficient to assess safety or efficacy. However, the independent panel that provides the UN Health Agency with vaccine recommendations has observed that Covaxin meets standards for protection against COVID-19 and the benefit of it far outweighs risks.
