Top five FDA dermatology approval stories of 2021
The FDA approved many new drugs and technologies over the past year, and in the dermatology world those approvals included treatments for a multitude of conditions.
Twyneo, an acne treatment that is a combination of tretinoin and benzoyl peroxide, was the most-read FDA-approval article on Healio for dermatology, while approvals for psoriasis, dermatitis and thermal burns followed.

FDA approves Twyneo cream for acne vulgaris
The cream, which uses the company’s patented technology to entrap the retinoid tretinoin and benzoyl peroxide in silica-based microcapsules, was approved for adults and children aged 9 years and older. Read more.
FDA approves Opzelura cream as topical atopic dermatitis treatment
Opzelura (ruxolitinib) cream is the first topical JAK inhibitor approved in the United States. It is indicated for patients aged 12 years and older whose disease is not adequately controlled with other topical prescription products. Read more.
FDA approves 200 mg prefilled Dupixent pen for at-home use
The Dupixent pen (dupilumab, Regeneron) is for patients aged 12 years and older and is used to treat atopic dermatitis and asthma. Read more.
FDA approves StrataGraft for thermal burns
Produced from two types of human skin cells, keratinocytes and dermal fibroblasts, StrataGraft is for topical application on burned skin. The patient’s skin cells should then grow to replace the lost skin, and the treatment can decrease the amount of healthy skin needed for grafting. Read more.
FDA approves Restylane Contour cheek fillers
The injection consists of a hyaluronic acid dermal filler formulated with Galderma’s XpresHAn Technology, which manufactures a smooth, injectable gel. Read more.
